In the River of Life of Gemstones
Many years spent living and working in exotic countries have enriched me with
a wealth of experiences, empathy and knowledge. But there was one country
where I found everything that I work with today: Sri Lanka, the legendary
homeland of rubies, sapphires, spinels, zircons …
Here I encounter people and stones, tradition and craftsmanship. Here I find
gemstones on site, at the famed classical deposits, authentic and freshly born.
Each stone speaks to me individually: that’s the primal source for the jewelry
that I craft for each person individually.
Like a valuable gemstone in a riverbed, in Sri Lanka I find everything that an
unmistakable piece of jewelry needs. Time, space, art, thoughts and people all
combine with one another here.
It’s not just the design sketched on the drawing-board that makes a piece of
jewelry personal. It’s also the unique way each person lives, thinks and feels.
A piece of jewelry has a clear and distinctiv task. Every detail tells a story
about the uniqueness of each human being. Jewelry is a source of inner joy.
And a catalyst of growth – each and every day.
Ancient Wisdom, Masterful Craftsmanship
in making jewelries
Once the right gem has been found, cut and polished to reveal its most
beautiful radiance, and after the idea has matured into a meaningful design, I
go into the workshop. For many years, my pieces of jewelry have been created
in collaboration with a well-established family of goldsmiths. These artisans
can look back upon a tradition of craftsmanship that’s thousands of years old.
They pursue their traditional calling with expertise, accuracy and love: one
can see and feel this in each finished piece. The gold is always alloyed anew:
18-karat white or yellow gold. Everything passes through the flames, is
wrought according to my designs, sawn, filed, and polished. All the work is
done by hand, with human energy. There are no readymade parts. All this
results in a masterpiece, a unique piece that rises from the ashes of charred
coconut husks.
Finally, the stone-setter embeds the stone into the piece. He needs a serene
heart, because the final responsibility rests within his hands. Everyone has
given their best. Now the gold makes its contribution, protecting and carrying
the gem to yield a finished piece of jewelry that can accompany its wearer
through life.
